Bei CTP wird das Medium während der Bildaufnahme im Plattenbelichter registriert (in präziser Position gehalten) und verlässt sich nicht auf ein separat ausgerichtetes Pin-Raster, wie es bei Film der Fall ist. Defekte aufgrund von Staub, Kratzern oder anderen Artefakten werden minimiert.
